I often meet families that speak two languages. She speaks German, he speaks Polish and their children? And their children speak both German and Polish. Yes, as you understood the topic of my new post are children-bilinguals.

It’s commonplace for today’s reality. Actually, every child can learn one, two, three or even four languages. Your child can do it too;)

Bilingualism: Don’t be Afraid of It!

Bilingualism is a normal thing for our society. A child often gets into the bilingual or polylingual society. In addition, speaking English as of the international business and economic language, every second child abroad has this subject at school. Many countries have several official languages and children speak them fluently.

Is Bilingualism Useful?

An important task of every parent is to give a child a proper linguistic development and help him express an opinion and understand people. These skills have a great influence on the role that a child will occupy in society.

Bilingualism develops memory, ingenuity, mathematical skills and logical thinking. Children-bilinguals have a quick reaction. They tend to study better than others at school. They are especially good at literature, foreign languages, and abstract sciences.

If you think that your child has problems with attention and memory from time to time, my previous post tells about essential oils for kids with such problems.

How to Bring up a Bilingual Child?

Modern parents want their children to learn foreign languages. If a child doesn’t speak English, it should be English. Still, bilingualism can’t appear in a form of a lesson. A child should cooperate with both languages.

Often, bilingualism develops spontaneously. Parents mix up words from different languages, a child speaks the native language at home and the local language outdoors. In such cases, a child makes many mistakes. So, it’s crucial to come up with it seriously.

The best idea that will bring you success is to teach a child several languages from the very first days of his life. If you start later (than 3 years as many specialists recommend) then the first native language will dominate. When your child turns 3, you can start learning languages together with a game, using audio or video lessons.

Bilingualism as a Result of a Game

You can connect a language learning with a game for preschoolers and engage the child to learn a foreign language. For instance, you can purchase a doll and say that a doll came from France and she speaks French only. Offer your kid to help a doll to play with other toys. Don’t leave your child alone, help him to speak with a doll and learn new words and expressions.

When a child learns foreign languages not during lessons but during real communication, a natural bilingualism starts forming. A child can freely communicate with fluent speakers not realizing that one language is native. Now both languages are the communication tool.

If a kid learns languages on purpose, he can take them as a game as it’s far from a tool of communication for him. Specialists call it an artificial bilingualism.

Still, if you can’t provide a linguistic society for your child, then you can help him. Find friends, language clubs (they are extremely popular nowadays), hire a nanny that freely speaks foreign languages.

Creating a pleasant linguistic society at home is difficult, especially if you don’t speak any foreign languages. Still, you can apply for a help to special language centers or courses.

No matter if you speak foreign languages or not, you should try to help your child develop these outstanding and useful skills! You will definitely see results in future and facilitate his life abroad.
