Hello to my precious readers in the new 2017! I bet you, guys, are too stuck in this New Year’s marvelous atmosphere of endless celebration and fun with your family and friends. And yes, coming back to the reality is quite harsh. For me, getting back to my writing routine was a bit of a challenge but at least I have managed to catch a strong wave of inspiration and continue my business here in my blog.
The recent issue I have faced during our Xmas and New Year’s holidays is my husband’s state of health. He catches a cold quite frequently and I assume his overall immune system doesn’t cope well with viruses and infections as I do. During the doctor’s appointment, she told us to pay a greater attention to our eating habits as my husband indeed lacks some of the most essential for men vitamins. In fact, I was quite surprised to hear that from her since I was always taking care of what my family eats at home. Little did I know that even our meals did always give him the necessary vitamins.
A nutrient deficiency is, by the way, a typical problem for European men since their diet often lacks veggies and fruit considered as vitamin-rich foods. That’s what I learned from the research when I was googling about this topic online.
I also found out that vitamins have a crucial role in men’s overall muscle strength, metabolism, sleep, sexual performance and the ability to fight serious diseases, like a heart attack or cancer. I then wondered: what are the best vitamins for men? I gathered a whole bunch of different information from our family doctor and other valid sources (I even peeped at some medical books) and ended up with a list of the best vitamins for men you and you, my dear mamas, have to make sure your husband and possibly you son gets enough of these.
10 Best Vitamins for Men
1. Vitamin D
Did you know that almost a half of the Americans suffer from Vitamin D deficiency? Yeah, it’s terrible to accept, but the fact remains. Both men and women tend to spend time indoors and move around by cars, which doesn’t give us a chance to enjoy walking in the sun. Enough of the vitamin D in the man’s body helps him producing enough testosterone, preventing depression, controlling the level of cholesterol and blood pressure as well as strengthening bones and even lowering the chances of inflammation. So, my dear women, spend your personal dates with your men outside and include eggs, dairy, and mushrooms in your date dinners =)
2. Vitamin B12
Yes, there is no problem for a man to get his portion of vitamin B12 from beef, poultry, and eggs. However, this vitamin must be properly absorbed and that’s can be a little tricky because some of the medications taken by men might be acid-blocking and prevent from proper vitamin B12 absorption. Take that fact: you don’t want a man to suffer from constant tiredness and central system issues.
3. Vitamin A
This fat-soluble vitamin can be consumed either through eating fruits, vegetables, eggs, whole milk, butter, meat, and fish or through taking a pill. Vitamin A can substantially improve your immune system and as we all know this vitamin is useful for a proper functioning of eyes, which is a big of an issue for “office” men. Consuming enough of this one can even prevent certain types of cancers (cervical, esophageal, pancreatic etc.)
4. Vitamin C
What does everyone know about ascorbic acid? Of course, it helps to protect our bodies from viruses. Therefore, make sure your spouse gets enough of vitamin C to keep him away from endless colds. Oh, I just dislike the time when my man is sick – he complains too much about it =) Besides, vitamin C helps to produce collagen, which is important for athletes (and other men doing regular physical activities) in order to hold muscles and other tissues together.
5. Vitamin E
Another antioxidant vitamin E prevents the oxidation of LDL (bad cholesterol). This is significant for men, as they tend to eat more foods high in cholesterol. This eventually helps to avoid heart diseases, helps against stroke, cancer and protects cells from damage. Where to find vitamin E? I hope you know that without me, but just in case: sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts, corn oil, soy milk etc.
6. Vitamin K
Vitamin K deficiency is very common for men and the major reason is a low consumption of vegetables, fruit and dairy products. As a result, men might suffer from heart diseases and bad blood clotting. Those food products high in vitamin K are green leafy veggies, broccoli, cabbage and organic eggs with wild-caught fish.
To supplement the list of best vitamins for men to take daily, I did add some of the following minerals and fatty acids I personally consider as an essential addition to the man’s diet as well.
The low level of magnesium can be typical for a man who tends to work out a lot and suffers from stress. You don’t want to come to a stage when your man experiences anxiety, muscle spasms, bad sleep and also has troubles going to the bathroom. Take a note: green veggies, beans, nuts, and seeds are very rich in magnesium.
8. Omega 3
Tuna, salmon, sardines, halibut or any other wild-caught fish – yum! That sounds very delicious and…nutritious of course. These meals full on omega 3 fish oils can keep your immune system strong and protect your heart and brain from various diseases. Therefore, if your man is not too much of a fish or seafood lover, try changing his preferences! (I personally had my husband read the benefits of Omega 3 oils on the men’s body, so now we are trying to eat fish at least 2-3 times per week).
If you consume enough potassium, then you should not be afraid of problems with high blood pressure, cardiovascular issues, poor digestion, muscle twitches, fatigue, weak bones etc. Most men who take pills to treat their heart diseases, take laxatives, have problems with kidneys, suffer to alcohol addictions and exercise more than 2 hours per day might be lack potassium. These products will keep your man secure from such deficiency: beans, avocado, sweet potato, bananas, salmon and grass-fed beef.
My final pick is zinc. What’s so special about it? First, it helps healing wounds faster and herewith fight some viruses. And yes, if being completely honest, zinc can improve the quality of a man’s sperm and even stimulate his sexual activity. So, girls, have you got some zinc-containing supplements already? I bet you should =) Or at least, make sure your man eats oysters, beans, nuts, crab, lobster (I wonder: does anyone eat lobsters at least once in a week?), whole grains, fortified breakfast cereals and dairy products.
I hope, you got everything from my article that you wanted to know about best vitamins for men. We are still in the process of changing our eating habits, and are you? I hope you all stay healthy and happy in the new 2017!
